IP Network Audio vs Traditional 100V Line PA — Which Is Right for Your Project?

Every PA project in Nepal eventually reaches the same fork: run traditional 100V speaker lines from a central amplifier rack, or put the audio on the data network and place amplifiers where the speakers are. Both are proven. The right answer depends on the shape of your building — and where it will be in five years.
How each one works
A 100V line system is beautifully simple: one amplifier drives a chain of speakers over ordinary two-core cable, with each speaker tapping the power it needs. IP network audio instead sends audio as data over your LAN; endpoints like the DSPPA MAG6806 convert it back to speaker power locally, all coordinated by a server such as the MAG6182II.
Where 100V line still wins
For a single hall, shop, restaurant or small office — one or two zones, one building — 100V remains cheaper, dead reliable, and serviceable by any technician in Nepal. A mixer amplifier and a chain of ceiling speakers can be installed in a day and operated with one knob. Nothing IP-based beats that simplicity at small scale.
Where IP changes the economics
The math flips the moment audio must cross buildings or floors in quantity. Pulling dedicated speaker cable across a campus is expensive and disruptive; the LAN is usually already there. Our Tribhuvan University installation covers 40+ buildings with zero new inter-building audio cabling. IP also brings per-zone scheduling (bells, azan, announcements), priority levels so emergency messages override music instantly, and central monitoring that tells you a speaker line failed before anyone complains.
The hybrid most projects actually need
In practice we design hybrids: IP backbone between buildings and floors, 100V distribution within each zone. You get network-wide control and monitoring while each local zone keeps the simplicity and cost of 100V. This is the architecture behind most of our transit and campus work.
Decision rule of thumb
One building, one or two zones: stay 100V. Multiple buildings, scheduled broadcasts, emergency priority, or growth plans: IP backbone, 100V edges. And if the project involves life safety, design the voice evacuation layer first — it constrains everything else.
